Courtesy of MattelA new collectible Barbie doll dressed as David Bowie's famous alien alter-ego Ziggy Stardust was released today, to mark the 50th anniversary of the release of the late rock legend's cosmic-themed song "Space Oddity."
Just like Ziggy, Barbie's wearing a shiny jumpsuit featuring metallic blue, red and silver stripes, and red vinyl calf-high boots. She's also sporting Bowie's classic early-'70s red-dyed mullet hairdo, and the same gold disc makeup on her forehead that he wore at that time.
According to a description on the official Barbie website, the doll "honors the cultural legacy of the musical genius who redefined rock and roll."
The Barbie David Bowie doll is priced at $50.
In other news, a limited-edition colored-vinyl reissue of Bowie's self-titled 1969 album, which included "Space Oddity," also was released today.
The disc was created by British designer Paul Smith and features a striking yellow, blue and green starburst patter. Only 3,000 copies of the LP will be available worldwide.
The David Bowie reissue is being sold at select Paul Smith shops and online at PaulSmith.com, although it appears to be currently sold out via the website.
